The Moller Skycar http://www.moller.com/skycar/has been in the works for ages and is the furthest along of all the new experimental VTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) vehicles.
Although it's still along way off, I'm impressed with all the forethought that's went into this thing. 4 engines, should 3 of them somehow die, and in the event of all 4 of them miracuously going kaput at the same time, there's a parachute to stop your worst-luck-in-the-world-ass from dying (not to mention saving your investment from the scrap heap).
Apparently, here's how the basic plan would work. You drive your car (or VTOL itself, since it can drive at a slower speed) to a runway (since the take-off winds are still a bit too high for residential tranquility). From there, you'd link-up to a 'grid' and the machine would drive for you at a cruising speed of 275 MPH, and a top speed of 375 MPH.
If the Skycar is not FAA certified by Dec.31, 2008, everyone that has placed a deposit down (minimum deposit is $10,000, but if you want one of the first 100, the deposit is $100,000), can ask for it back.
In other words, this guy's quite confident that he'll have it done or else he'll be out quite a bit of funding.
Of course, FAA certified might not exactly mean 'ready to buy', but it can't be far off.
